Today we are just scratching the surface of what 3D scanning technologies can do.

Currently 3D scanning has its limitations – high precision equipment is very expensive, low-end products do not offer the required precision for some applications, some 3D scanners only cater for certain-sized objects and the complexity of applying the 3D-scanned files to other applications is not so straightforward.

Technology continues to improve with better software to improve the application of laser and structured light, which are the two dominant technologies for 3D scanning today. New technology such as photogrammetry, using depth sensing from cameras, are coming to the market enabling basic 3D scanning with just a smartphone.
