LET'S TALK ABOUT 3D SCANNING

The Additive Manufacturing Users Group (AMUG) annual conference, in St Louis, spanning five days, proved to be a great education and networking opportunity for the 1000+ attendees including Growshapes.

Growshapes participated in the AMUGexpo demonstrating the full DAVID SLS-3D scanner set up with DAVID4 software,  automated turntable and desk scan lever. We were the very few companies demonstrating 3D scanners and certainly the only one at a 4 digit price point.  We had a constant stream of inquiries with conversations spanning many topics, but by far the most common conversation was the potential to use DAVID 3D scanners for reverse engineering.

It became apparent that a number of conference attendees were currently outsourcing scanning processes.  When questioned, as to why this was not being performed in-house, two main reasons were given.  Firstly, there was an expectation that 3D scanning equipment, capable of producing sufficiently high quality scans, was too expensive to justify investment.  Secondly, there was an assumption that the work required to capture and then clean up scans, prior to creating an STL file, was too complex and time consuming, so best left to a service bureau.

The ease with which the DAVID4 software can be operated and used to fuse scans and export in STL file format, showed that 3D scanning is a straightforward process that businesses can carry out for themselves.  And with precision of up to 50 microns (for the DAVID SLS-3) and 60 microns (DAVID SLS-2) the quality of scans easily exceeded the requirements for most reverse engineering projects.

In addition, based upon the cost that AMUG conference attendees told us that they were being charged, to outsource their scanning, the payback period on the purchase of a DAVID 3D scanner would typically be less than six months for a business undertaking even just one scanning project per month!
