LET'S TALK ABOUT 3D SCANNING

3D scanning technology is changing our world!

Today we live in a 3D physical world, yet we interact with a largely 2D digital world. What if the digital world could all become 3D so you could see the digital world just as you see the real world?
There are many things we don’t yet know about the world around us; for instance, what is the structure of organic forms? At what rate to do natural things change? How have organic forms evolved from the past?
But now we have 3D-scanning technologies as stepping stones to understanding the world around us.  Currently, one of our customers is studying the bone structures of fauna in New York to comprehend, catalog and teach children details about birds through each bone structure.  You can read about this exciting project here.  The more things we can scan in 3D, the more we can analyze, dissect and uncover things we never knew before.

Where are we heading?

3D scanning can also enhance the interactive digital experience.  What if, when you were online, you could spin around that ceramic you were thinking of buying for your home in 360 degrees? You could see not only the front, but also whether you liked the back and sides, and then decide where you might want to display it. Or, if you had a 3D scanned image of yourself, you could go into virtual reality and try on an outfit for sale on a website to see if it fitted and looked good before purchasing. No more closets full of unworn mistakes!
In effect, 3D scanning will unlock many applications that are yet to be invented. 3D scanning today is used largely for reverse engineering, measurement, design development and archiving but the future of 3D scanning could be applied beyond the traditional realms into new computing platforms like Virtual Reality (VR) as we have already mentioned, to help people interact with the digital world in 3D.
3D scanning is a key technology for unlocking the future of the 3D digital world. At Growshapes we have been at the forefront of affordable 3D scanning – using our expertise to partner with many different customers who are excited about realizing their visions. We could be your partner on your 3D innovation journey into the future, too. Come talk to us.

Three scantastic facts you didn’t know about 3D digitization affecting your world

11/21/2016

We live in an information society where we can consume a multitude of information on various devices, but the digital information we consume today is still predominantly 2D.

The drive to digitizing almost everything is rapidly shifting from 2D to 3D as you can see in the investment being made into Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality and Virtual Reality by major companies such as Google, Microsoft, Intel and HP. 3D is not only for the entertainment domain, however.  It is already being used in medicine, architecture, engineering, design, manufacturing, archaeology, and cosmetic surgery.

But here are three ways that it will affect the lives of most people in the next 20 years:
  1. Autonomous cars will need to further understand our world in virtual 3D, as these are essentially robots on wheels that need to comprehend the 3D road structures and traffic rules that humans have constructed in order to maneuver and drive safely.
  2. The boundaries between the virtual world and the real world may start to blur as the virtual world becomes 3D.
  3. The next generation of children will expect the digital world to be in 3D to enrich their learning and understanding about the world around them. Children are already interacting with various 3D digital technologies and these will become the norm for our children and grandchildren in the future.

So, 3D scanning technologies are likely to play a bigger role in 3D digitization of the world, understanding the world in 3D and archiving the world in 3D.  As more applications requiring 3D content, 3D recognition and 3D comprehension increase, so will the demand for 3D scanning.  Technology will continue to advance as the need to digitize everything you can see into a virtual 3D model will only increase.

The 3 things you may not know about 3D scanning

11/16/2016

With HP acquiring DAVID scanning technology in November to add to their range, the future of 3D-scanning has taken a giant leap.

And, as an HP Silver Partner for this specialized technology, at Growshapes we are proud at be at the forefront of what’s happening. We thought we’d share a few things you may not have been aware of regarding 3D scanning:
  1. Camera, light, and laser are important hardware components of 3D scanners but what actually sets a 3D-scanning device apart is its software algorithm, i.e. its brain to correctly capture, measure and replicate the physical model as accurately as possible.
  2. There is a wide range of 3D scanners on the market you can choose from –  from personal low- cost scanners that just use smartphone cameras, to industrial grade high-cost scanners that uses laser. The HP (formerly DAVID) scanners sit squarely in the middle of the price range but can achieve industrial grade accuracy due to the deployment of structured-light technology.
  3. 3D scanning has been around since the 1960s but it was a costly investment to get access to a device. With the advancements in optics and software algorithms, and solutions like an HP (formerly DAVID) 3D scanner in the market, 3D scanning is becoming much more accessible to university research labs, R&D labs and designers but we have yet to uncover its full potential.

Intrigued?

3D scanning technologies could play a bigger role in 3D digitization of our world, understanding the world in 3D, and archiving the world in 3D. As new applications are designed that exploit the full potential of contents that are captured and created in 3D, consumption of 3D digital content will rise and so will the demand for 3D scanning.  Online shopping in 3D; museums with 3D digital archives; engineers analyzing 3D data; and developments in the field of medicine will become truly customized solutions. Just imagine… the 3D scanning technology will continue to innovate to realize the vision of digitizing everything you can see into 3D.

New discoveries are being made every day. If you would like to know more about the endless possibilities with 3D scanners, you can visit here for images, video and new ways the equipment is being used.
