LET'S TALK ABOUT 3D SCANNING

3D scanning can be sweet

Technology and art often collide in new and interesting ways.  This is one such example.

The project, titled A Ritual of Habits, was created by articst Rosalie Yu, who documented desserts and sweets she consumed for 2 years.

The project is composed of two parts. First, what Yu calls “virtual theater,” consists of a VR experience in which the viewer is transplanted into a world of sweets, and an augmented reality experience in which the sweets appears in front of you through a smartphone. After taking 20–50 close-up photos of a pastry, Yu  transfers photos into the desktop photogrammetry app Agisoft PhotoScan to generate a 3D model of the food. Then she uses the digital sculpting tool ZBrush to make repairs after a scan and to apply texture. After the 3D models are finished, Yu uses ARKit and Unity to build the AR and VR experiences.

The second part of the project is an installation of 3D-printed objects. Yu’s sculptures of the sweets were 3D printed with stereolithography.

Yu relates the 3D scanning process to early photography.

“The way a chemical image takes shape on photo paper is similar to the software’s process of stitching photos, connecting a point cloud, and reconstructing a mesh in 3D space,” says Yu. “You can’t immediately see the results of photogrammetry, just like traditional photographs that had to be developed in a dedicated space like darkroom. There is something magical and lonesome about both of these expansive processes.”

HP Sprout has photogrammetry based 3D scanning but HP 3D Structured Light Scanner uses structured light which can capture futher dimensional details.

Currently we are running a special campaign:
If you buy a HP Pro S3 3D scanner, you get a free turntable ($1,199 worth) to ensure your 3D scanning is a success.

3D Scanning of Artifacts

Recently Stanford University published an article talking about out how Stanford University Libraries is helping to 3D scan bones and artifacts to create a 3D digital surrogate of the original.

“Digitization is one way we can not just preserve our heritage and our history but also make these really important objects or works of art available to our students and faculty and researchers in the world at large,”  according to Stuart Snydman, Associate Director for digital strategy at Stanford Libraries who leads the 3D scanning effort.  He is our customer too!

This view resonates with the Eastern Washington University archaeologists.
Last autumn, Growshapes went to Easter Washington University to see how our customer 3D scans artifacts for archaeological research.  You can see the video here.

3D scanning's strength is that it can create an accurate digital twin of the original objects in 3D and once digitized, it can be analyzed, manipulated and further processed.

Think about all the physical objects in the world that can be digitized in 3D!

Yes, it's true. Sometimes great offers like this just pops up.

You will get a FREE Automatic Turntable Pro (worth $1,199!) with every new purchase of an HP 3D Structured Light Scanner Pro S3.  Reflecting this offer, we have new reduced prices for the full bundle solution, where a desk scan lever comes with the 3D scanner and automatic turntable too. This FREE turntable offer is valid for a limited time only while stocks last, so hurry!

The HP Automatic Turntable Pro is a well designed, heavy turntable that keeps your objects very steady on the turntable while it rotates for 3D scanning. This is very importat as it results in better alignment of the 3D scans.  The HP Pro S3 achieves an accuracy of 0.05% of the scan size and also captures color and texture and with the turntable, your 3D scan is done in a few minutes.

So if you were thinking of digitizing that physical object into a 3D digital scan file, now is the time!

A call from a happy customer makes our day!

It actually is not that often that we receive a call from our customer after the purchase of a product to tell us how great the product is and how our help immensely helped his purchase decision.

Today was such a day.

Our customer took time out of his busy day to tell us how delighted he is with the HP 3D Structured Light Scanner Pro S3 and how the HP Pro S3 Dual Camera Upgrade kit made his life so much easier. He can now 3D scan intricate details of the beautiful sculptures his wife creates of wild animals at Kitty Cantrell Studio.

He wanted to thank us especially for how we helped him through the purchase process.

We suggested that he should starting off with a single camera Pro S3 solution first to see how he likes it and then move up to a dual camera solution with the HP Pro S3 Dual Camera Upgrade Kit. The dual camera solution really cut down his 3D scanning time from 40-80 hours to 2 hours+ as the stereo vision can capture every detail accurately with the turntable.  What a time-saver!

The beauty of the HP 3D structured light scanner solution is that it's modular so you can have a single camera or dual camera or even customize with your own camera and projectors.

So if you are still comtemplating whether this is a good solution for you, look no further.  Get your full solution from
here.
